The only reason why I still have a Smartphone is probably Maps tbh. But idk. The smartphone is probably not the problem anyways. The problem is how we use it. Or maybe how every Platform wants to keep us online as long as possible. That is where it gets unhealthy I guess.

Freeze your credit - www.usa.gov/credit-freeze 2. Change your passwords, randomize them for each service 3. Consider email aliases to deal with future data breaches

The fact that you buy a phone every year, have three different streaming subscriptions AND used UA-cam premium honestly says a lot about your phone use. Smartphones aren't exactly the problem it's you. Self-control isn't that hard

Maybe self-control isn't hard for you, but it is for a lot of people. Especially when companies explicitly design their products/services to be as addictive as possible. Doing stuff like "downgrading" on tech and going offline can be incredibly helpful for people who are especially vulnerable to the methods companies use to influence our decision-making.

@@rejectconvenience I'm not at all saying what you've done is not right, because in many ways, it is right, it lets you experience the things around you again, it doesn't make you reliant on tech for all your needs, but it does surprisingly still come at a high cost which I cannot understand for such devices hardware being quite, mediocre, therefore should be of cost of about 50 USD

For my job and messaging friends and utilities, etc, i require a smartphone. I don't have the luxury of purchasing new items or restricting when i have my phone on me, so ive been using an app to block other apps. Whatsapp/telegram/discord/banking/health apps stay, but youtube, insta (have finally convinced my friends to switch from messaging there to discord), etc are all limited to 20 minutes a day. 20 minutes of watching something then im done. On my pc i only watch things intentionally. On my phone i doom scroll. This has worked so much for me to disconnect

Thank you for such an informative video! I'm trying to start small (mainly deleting social media apps and regulating them to desktop), which I believe primarily would fix my problem, but im really considering the jump to a Dumbphone because I'd really, truly, as hilarious as this sounds, love to be bored and see what I can get up to again, like I did as a kid. I'm still a bit worried about what taking the plunge would mean for how my internet pals would communicate with me (I don't know what Dumb phone brands would let me at least download Discord, which i purely use to message others), but I'm glad you brought up using an iPad for the 2FA apps, that's huge, I don't know why I didn't consider that! one of the best videos on this topic. you touch on things that people just don’t talk about when it comes to switching to a dumbphone. i guess its because of your 2 year experience, most ytubers use their dumbphone for 7/30 days and that’s it. btw how did you make the projection screen look so realistic like there is a real light pointing at it creating a glare such a neat touch!

    • @rejectconvenience
      @rejectconvenience 13 днів тому

Ah yes! I love it when people ask technical questions haha I'll put a screenshot to what the exact node setup in the forum somewhere rejectconvenience.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=28 but essentially, the screen itself is the emission point. In the original video, it was an actual light projection using cycles, but it took FOREVER to render, so I opted to figure out how to do it in Eevee, and its pretty simple. Image texture get split a few ways, one to handle emission (so the actual "glowing"), and then the other is for the blacks to be the same material as the rest of the projector screen, which gives it that "light projected on a screen" feel, because the darkest values on a projector are only as dark as the surface you're projecting on!

@@MattsFans Great question - I don't. I use an old 2014 MacBook Pro on an older version of macOS (that is not allowed to get on the outside internet for security reasons, but it has access to my local network so I can add music/remote into it from a newer computer). I am just more familiar with that workflow from back in the day, and I like it. It isn't perfect for sure, but it works well for me. That said, if you were still wanting to use an iPod, you could flash the firmware of the iPod to use RockBox, which allows drag and drop for music, which obviously doesn't depend on any particular OS (hell, you could use an android phone if you really wanted to!). Plus, RockBox supports more music file types, like FLAC, so it's arguably a better way of doing it. There are a lot of great videos here on UA-cam that give demos on how to use it and how it all works.

As I'm getting closer to adulthood, I've been thinking about how pervasive of an issue this iteration of technology is, and how much it affects us. As a member of gen z, a desire for infinite experience has been implanted into us by these corporations, and instead of leading to that impossible outcome, we get stuck with experiences we don't care about, because there's always something new, promising to be better, but never delivering. With digital media ownership like on itunes, and especially with physical media, since we pay for a singular experience at a time instead of a "service", we can actually feel a connection to what we watch. To be honest, I only ever get into a few things at a time naturally, and that's what i want. I want a few deep experiences, not 1000 shallow ones. For the $2,305 my family currently spends in a year on streaming services & cable tv that ends up serving as background noise 80% of the time, i could instead have a huge collection of fully legally owned peices of art, including tv, movies, books, & albums I'll have for my entire life. While im probably not going to go full dumb phone, especially since its easier to make my current phone dumber since i use android, there is something to be said about becoming more intentional with what you do with technology. The cycle these tech billionaires want for us, caring about everything, does nothing for us. Commiting to a few things to care about & taking in all of their minutiae fully does everything.

I got a Japanese smart flip phone with a touch screen and my “dumb” phone isn’t that dumb but I realized all I ever used my phone for was music, a glorified camera, podcasts, and to read every day. I can do all that on this thing and it’s got a 1TB memory card. I can’t use US cell networks so I use my iPhone hotspot for it, but I’ve all but stopped using my phone for things besides that. I lose my iPhone on the daily bc of my adhd and how it’s just become a gps and a router essentially😂Going with a dumb phone doesn’t mean abandoning modern tech it’s a way of avoiding it’s manipulative nature of our psyche. I work in cyber security and I can say for certain everyone worth their salt in my office get dumb phones or at least avoid tech at all possible points. I’ve learned those who understand it the best use it the least bc they get how dangerously powerful they are and how we need to respect the power the tech has over our lives

And yes, he does have more restraint then me and only uses reddit, but also the moment he's back at home, he's always doing something on his pc (be it coding or playing a videogame or watching videos, or for things that are not connected to the computer: cooking). Also, also, I kinda need something in the background while sleeping and I don't know how else I would get something in the background except for having my phone in my bed with my sleeping playlist.

I'm actually switching back to my flip phone as I'm listening to this. I've been in a loop of back and forth with my smartphone and flip phone over the past 2 years, but I'm trying to stick to my flip phone now! The biggest obstacles were getting around town (I will get town maps and the schedule for the city buses tomorrow) and calling for ubers or even paying with my card in case I left it at home and didn't have any physical money with me. Well, I'll probably keep the smartphone around for things like digital tickets, but I'll only use it then. Maybe the biggest struggle of all would be UA-cam and music. For UA-cam I just unsubscribed to all channels and manually added them to a page on my Notion. I'm trying to only check the channels once a week, then select the videos that truly interest me-if any-and then download those videos. I personally use online converters and watch the videos at max 720p to save data, but I guess UA-cam premium also works. I then save it to watch it on my PC. For music, IM thinking of investing on a good CD player and maybe a good ol' MP3 player. I'm trying to use music less as I rely on it for everything, so having CDs would be better. I'm an accidental NEET rn so I can't really afford anything tho. Actually, I lied. I still use my smartphone, but it's exclusively for WhatsApp. My partner heavily relies on it to feel more connected by sending stuff and her mental state isn't the best rn. Since she is away and will be gone on her surgery recovery for the next weeks, I'll keep it for her sake 😅 maybe I'll ditch it in a more stable future.

Considering you knew about UA-cam downloaders, I'm surprised you ever spent money on music

I like to support small artists, music means a lot to me, so it's worth it to me :)

@@rejectconvenience hey, no, fairy nough I just happen to listen to a lot of videogame OSTs or dead artists, so I always forget that paying for music ever makes money go to the artists

Don't get me wrong, there are certainly some songs that are ONLY on UA-cam, like the slowed + reverb music I talked about in my last video, but when I'm able to support, I do (maybe because I play an instrument, so I feel more connected to supporting those far more talented than me lol)

What phone do you use? And can you still buy iPods?

I put the link to the phone I use in the description, as well as some resources for buying iPods - I really encourage starting at second hand stores first, as it's gonna be a lot cheaper than Ebay or Elite Obsolete - that said, the guy that runs Elite Obsolete is a good source for sure.

My goal for the optimal setup is an android phone with sodeloaded OS, maybe linux. This would be my emergency phone / need a smartphone phone. And a modified old IPod for my music.

Can certainly agree that having my phone on me causes me to implulse buy things online that I wouldn't otherwise. I'll go down a rabbithole of thinking about something and then ill end up convincing myself i need a certain item. i have a number of ipods (only bought 1, the rest i saved from work scrap) and 2 minidisc walkmans (also saved from work scrap), but i find myself just using my phone even though i love the experience of an ipod, odd.

I had the same problem for sure, but accounting for the cost of impulse buys would have been impossible to track, so I left it out of the savings argument. I have greatly improved my ability to think before I buy, and many times, forget what I was even looking to buy thanks to clearing my cookies/history every time I close Firefox. Makes it a lot harder to obsess if the tab goes away every time I turn on my computer!

I am blind, so just never made the jump to smartphones after they came out. Yes, they do make TTS programs for them but that's yet more cost for the ap/software. No, the onboard speech isn't enough for someone without any sight at all to use any smartphone. Anyway, I love my dumbphone and i see more and more folks are returning to them. I have a nice PC and a modern laptop computer. Those do plenty for my needs. Why do i need another device that does the same stuff only not as well and that costs $1k+? I take my dumbphone hiking and camping a lot. I use those 'tough' phones and have yet to break one. Last one hung on for 8+ years. My current is still good at over 3 years.

Keep it going, Ant-man. You are an inspiration to many of us. Humans have evolved...and not for the better of humanity. We are victims of ourselves.

My best experience is to install a custom ROM on my Android device, as I really like having a reasonable camera for still photography at my fingertips. I also install 0 apps that include people I don't know, barring a web browser. The only complaint I have is that I can't use Google Pay, but honestly that's not even that bad. I'm able to eek out 2-3 days of battery life out of my device, WITH Google Play Services (required by my carrier, Google Fi). I only have a Reddit feed from subs that *I* decided to subscribe to, and I do it on the browser (I do unofficial, free tech support for LineageOS, and Linux Mint on their subs). I also loved the part you included about physical media! I have a shelf of CDs that I rip and put on an SD card for my phone. I also download Audience tapes and Matrix tapes because I love Grateful Dead shows (most recent download was 06-26-74). My screen usage is almost always less than 4 hours, even on Sundays where I decide "I want to spend time on my phone just for fun). I spend most of my time texting, followed up by scrolling on Reddit. My numbers are messed up by my Sam's Club app, which I end up having on my screen for long periods of time, and an app to control Roku devices, which I also keep open for long periods of time (hello, it's a TV remote) while watching with my family. I think this is the perfect balance for me, and for a lot of people. Advice: if you are more than two people removed than literally anyone on the app, uninstall it. I am left with GroupMe and Discord (which I want to get rid of, but my friends seem to be addicted to it lol). I think you should pick up a Motorola One 5G Ace with 128GB of RAM, and test out LineageOS for a week or something to see if that helps you with your technology balance- it has enough of everything, but not too much, and should work with any modern carrier. Good work on the two year review- this is the first that I've ever seen of something like this, and I like the insight, as someone who dislikes spending time on their phone overall, but thinks the compromises of a dumbphone are too great for my life.

Came across this vid because i wanted to see other people's opinions on digital minimalism etc and honestly i'm all for it, i bought 3 new piece of Tech this year, 2 of them being phones and the third being a Boox Palma.. i use my newest smartphone (Zfold6) as my primary work device (and even a computer replacement via dex) and during downtime/weekends i use a Nokia 215 2024 (paired with my boox palma for reading) the combination is honestly amazing since i got sick of constant emails/messages, having the ability to physically avoid those even for a day or two does wonders for the mind (embracing silence is a great thing) one of my jobs is perpetually on call and if required.. people can contact my main number and it will redirect to my other number but having that buffer is great, it's quite difficult to explain to people who don't have as much digital noise in their life but honestly i'm loving this trend of going back to how it used to be

I saw an article a few weeks ago about young people switching to dumb phones (ap news?) mostly it boiled down to avoiding social media by not carrying it with you everywhere. I think one girl reported she had been spending upwards of 10-20 hours a week on social because of the phone.

I've made the deleting socials from my phone move, but I still struggle by being on UA-cam too much. I should delete all browsers from my phone, that would help solve the YT on the go issue

Thanks for the update video, really interesting stuff. I've been trying to make routine adjustments to accomplish my personal goals, but the allure of going all in with a dumbphone is still appealing to me, until I remember how much personal messaging I do through smartphone apps like whatsapp, discord, etc. that I just can't access with a phone only. this video did help me realize that watching youtube has been a problem for me in my daily routine though, so I disabled the youtube app on my phone and am about to log out of my youtube account on my computer. i'd say I'll update with progress, but
